The lab should be a respected and safe space for everyone. We are a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic laboratory, and all views should be respected. This diversity is what makes the laboratory strong.
Use people’s pronouns and preferred names when addressing fellow lab members.
Do not be afraid to ask questions whether in the lab or in group meetings. We all have different experiences and thus there are no "stupid questions". Different approaches should be recognized and heard.
Nobody in the lab has all the answers and is correct all the time (this includes Corey). Be respectful but do not be afraid to question approaches and ideas.
All religious holidays and commitments will be recognized unreservedly.
Standard lab hours are 9 am - 5 pm, Monday-Friday unless otherwise agreed. Every group member can request to not be contacted outside of these lab hours except in case of emergency.
Family time is always respected - if you require time away from the lab due to family circumstances, please discuss this with Corey.
Your individual wellness should be prioritized over any single reaction result. Sometimes we all need some extra time to focus on our wellbeing and mental health. Please don’t hesitate to let Corey know if you need this time.
Safety and wellbeing
Safety is our number one concern. Before attempting any new reactions, you should consult with Corey or a senior lab member. If you do not feel comfortable, there is someone in the lab that can help walk you through any new, exploratory reaction.
Keep the lab clean. All laboratory equipment is to be cleaned after each use. In addition, personal work areas should be kept clean and devoid of clutter to avoid any spills or accidents.
Long hours do not make you more productive or safe. More effective use of time outweighs more hours. Plan ahead and work efficiently to avoid burnout. We also do not work alone. If you need to be in during off-hours or weekends, make sure another lab member (or Corey) is present when doing active chemistry.
Research Progress and career development
Research progress will be measured by knowledge gained, not simply the number of hours worked. You should be learning something from every reaction that you run.
Each of us has different career aspirations (industry, academia, finance, etc.) and Corey will do whatever he can to support YOUR career goals.
Please let Corey know of any extracurricular career development opportunities that you are interested in, teaching for example. All such opportunities that Corey is aware of will be shared with the group.
Conferences and internal/external presentations are a great networking experience and a way to show your work outside of our lab. Attendance will be supported as fully as possible.
